ITC Ordered to Pay Rs 1 Lakh for One Biscuit Less in Packet of Sunfeast Marie Light Biscuits
ITC, one of India's leading FMCG companies, has been ordered by a consumer court in Tamil Nadu to pay Rs 1 lakh to a consumer who found one biscuit less in a packet of Sunfeast Marie Light biscuits.
The consumer, P Dillibabu, had purchased the biscuits from a retail store in Manali in December 2021. When he opened the packet, he found that it only contained 15 biscuits. He complained to ITC, but the company did not take any action.
Dillibabu then filed a complaint with the consumer court. The court, after hearing the arguments of both parties, ruled in Dillibabu's favor. The court held that ITC had violated the Consumer Protection Act by packing only 15 biscuits in a packet that was advertised to contain 16. The court also found that ITC had not taken any steps to resolve Dillibabu's complaint.
The court ordered ITC to pay Rs 1 lakh to Dillibabu as compensation for the deficiency in the product. The court also ordered ITC to discontinue the sale of the deficient batch of biscuits.
This is not the first time that ITC has been found guilty of unfair trade practices. In 2019, the company was ordered by a consumer court in Delhi to pay Rs 25,000 to a consumer who found one less packet of biscuits in a pack of 12.
These cases show that consumer courts are taking a tough stance against companies that indulge in unfair trade practices. Companies should be aware that they can be held liable for any deficiency in their products, even if it is just one unit.
