Introduction:


On September 2, 2023, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a charge sheet against three railway officials in connection with the June 2, 2023, triple-train collision in Balasore, Odisha. The three officials are:


1.Arun Kumar Mahanta, Senior Section Engineer (Signals)

2.Mohammad Amir Khan, Section Engineer

3.Pappu Kumar, Technician


The charge sheet accuses the officials of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing disappearance of evidence, and endangering the safety of passengers.

The accident occurred when three trains collided near Bahanaga Bazar railway station in Balasore district. The trains involved were the Puri-Hatia Express, the Kesinga-Puri Passenger, and the Bhubaneswar-Visakhapatnam Express. The collision killed 296 people and injured over 1,200.


The CBI investigation found that the accident was caused by a signal failure. The officials were responsible for maintaining the signals at the Bahanaga Bazar railway station. The charge sheet alleges that the officials were negligent in their duty and that their negligence caused the accident.


The officials have denied the charges against them. They have said that they are innocent and that they will fight the case in court.
