Aditya-L1: India's First Solar Mission

The Aditya-L1 mission is a solar mission by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It is scheduled to be launched on September 2, 2023, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.


The Aditya-L1 spacecraft will be placed in a halo orbit around the Lagrange point L1, which is located about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. This orbit will allow the spacecraft to study the Sun from a vantage point that is not blocked by Earth's atmosphere.


The Aditya-L1 mission has four main objectives:

1.To study the solar corona, the outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere.

2.To study the solar magnetic field and its evolution.

3.To study the solar wind, the stream of charged particles that flows from the Sun.

4.To study the impact of solar activity on Earth's space environment.


The Aditya-L1 spacecraft will be equipped with seven payloads to carry out these observations. These payloads include:


1.A coronagraph to image the solar corona.

2.A magnetometer to measure the solar magnetic field.

3.A particle detector to measure the solar wind.

4.A radiometer to measure the Sun's thermal radiation.

5.A spectrometer to measure the Sun's composition.

6.A heliograph to image the Sun in visible light.

7.A telescope to study the Sun's chromosphere and transition region.


The Aditya-L1 mission is expected to provide valuable insights into the Sun's behavior and its impact on Earth. The data collected by the mission will help scientists to better understand solar storms, which can disrupt communications and power grids on Earth.


The Aditya-L1 mission is a major milestone for ISRO and for India's space program. It is the first dedicated solar mission by ISRO and it will be the first Indian spacecraft to be placed in a halo orbit around the Lagrange point L1. The success of the Aditya-L1 mission will pave the way for future solar missions by ISRO.
